About this event

In 2025, Nikola Meeuwsen wrote history. As the first Dutch pianist ever, he won the first prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. An achievement that immediately placed him on the international stage and confirmed what many connoisseurs had long anticipated. In December 2025, Meeuwsen opened the 22nd edition of the Internationaal Kamermuziekfestival Utrecht together with star violinist and artistic director Janine Jansen. “The playing of Jansen and Meeuwsen is otherworldly. They pull each other into the depths, rise up, hover; often you don’t know whether to sob or smile. (…) Meeuwsen shows a depth that is absurd for a 23-year-old,” wrote de Volkskrant about their five-star concert. Two months earlier he had made a dazzling solo debut in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In March he appeared alongside Enrico Pace in our Dutch Delight series, in a — naturally — sold-out Kleine Zaal. It would not be surprising if our Grote Zaal is also filled to the last seat in December to hear this remarkable talent perform. The programme includes Partita No. 1 in B-flat major by Johann Sebastian Bach — clear, dance-like and rich in subtle detail — and the monumental Piano Sonata No. 23 ‘Appassionata’ by Ludwig van Beethoven.
