About this event

More than half a century ago, thirty young women from Nieuwe Pekela made history with the very first women's strike in the Netherlands. At the Champ Clark cigar factory, they stopped working in December 1969 to protest unequal pay. What began as a spontaneous 'wildcat' strike grew into a four-week struggle that ended with equal pay for equal work. Thirty women. Four weeks. One unforgettable victory. Directed by Karin Noeken and with texts by Nico van der Wijk, Theatergroep Waark brings this special Groningen story back to life. The captivating musical theatre performance features songs composed by Groningen singer Bert Hadders. A strong and driven female cast plays the factory girls who, without seeing themselves as feminists, wage a principled battle against the wage gap and inequality in the labor market. It is a story about solidarity, courage, and the power of collective resistance. It shows how ordinary people in small villages make great history.
